Newquay is one of the UK’s most popular holiday destinations, and with all its picturesque scenery, it’s not hard to understand why. Newquay is the ideal place for the whole family to relax, unwind, and enjoy a fantastic, fun-filled escape.

Having been voted as “One of the Nation’s Favourite Seaside Towns” in the prestigious Which Holiday Survey and “Best Family Holiday Destination” by readers of COAST magazine, Newquay is known for its fine beaches and elegant charm. Keep reading to find out more about our magnificent corner of the world.

Where is the Beautiful Town of Newquay?

Located on the north coast of Cornwall (also known as the Atlantic Coast) in south-west England, Newquay is nestled in the heart of our stunning county. It sits slightly north of other popular Cornish locations like Holywell Bay and Perranporth Beach.

The region is easily accessible via a variety of travel options. Cornwall Airport Newquay receives flights from London Gatwick and Manchester airports all year round, and in the summer months, flights are also available from Belfast City, Newcastle, Doncaster, Stanstead, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Birmingham.

If you prefer to catch the train, then you’ll complete your journey at Newquay train station, which sits right next to the buzzing Great Western Beach.

Newquay is also easily accessible by car. There aren’t any motorways in Cornwall, so most drivers will travel to the end of the M5 near Exeter, or the end of the A303, and then take the A30 across Cornwall and into Newquay, which is well signposted.

What Can I Expect to Find in Newquay?

The popularity of Newquay as a UK holiday destination is largely due to its astonishing natural assets, which include some of Cornwall’s finest beaches. To appreciate the beauty of these beaches, all visitors need to do is walk down to the harbour on a sunny day or evening and soak up the vast swathes of golden sand, glistening waters and towering cliffs.

Newquay caters to a diverse range of visitors, with excellent surfing opportunities, vibrant nightlife, and fantastic family-friendly attractions – there’s a lot on offer here. Its reputation as the UK’s surfing capital began back in the 1960s and has continued to grow, with Fistral Beach becoming a regular stop on the professional surfing circuit in the 80s and 90s.

A great range of top-quality attractions are within easy reach, such as zoos, aquariums, gardens, and golden sandy beaches, alongside classic events like the Boardmasters music and surfing festival, and a wide range of exhilarating activities both in and out of the water.

Newquay is also a hot spot for mouth-watering food, with ample top-class restaurants to choose from and a wide selection of places to eat, offering all types of cuisine for all budgets. The town is bursting with cafés, bars and restaurants, and it’s been in high demand from well-known chefs who aspire to open up their new restaurants in the area. So, you can expect a superb meal out here in Newquay!

Where Are the Best Places to Visit in Newquay?

One of Newquay’s hottest tourist draws is Fistral Beach, which is one of the best surfing beaches in all the UK and Europe. This long, sandy beach is west facing, offering the perfect location for families to enjoy the simple pleasures of the sea and surf, combined with first class facilities including surf equipment hire, lessons, shops, showers, toilets, car parking, and, of course, various restaurants and cafés.

One of the decadent restaurants which sits on the shores of Fistral Beach is Rick Stein. There’s something everyone will love at this family-friendly eatery, from Rick’s famous fish and chips served with homemade tartare or Goan curry sauce, to Asian kitchen curries and noodles which can be eaten in the restaurant or taken away to eat on the beach. They also serve mouth-watering homemade desserts and tasty Cornish cream tea!

Overlooking Fistral Beach and a landmark of Newquay is the Headland Hotel in which you can find the Michelin starred Ugly Butterfly restaurant, this is a fine dining restaurant with silver service. This is one of award winning chef Adam Handling’s restaurants, another of which is only a couple of minutes drive from The Beeches – the Tartan Fox pub located in a 400 year old building. The Tartan Fox offers fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere.

Another of Newquay’s finest beaches is the Great Western Beach, which is popular with both families and surfers. Despite being close to the heart of Newquay, it’s still one of the area’s quieter beaches, and there are plenty of rock pools for inquisitive minds to explore. Neighbouring beaches are also easy to walk to at low tide, and the towering cliffs which surround it provide a dramatic backdrop.

A funky spot to enjoy some food near Great Western Beach is Secret Garden, known as Newquay’s premium pizza and wine bar. Serving delicious artisan pizzas, organic wine, carefully crafted cocktails, local Cornish beers, gins, and ciders, the restaurant provides some of the best views in the area whilst you enjoy a refuelling bite to eat and refreshing drink.

Alfresco Cooking & Dining

Top 5 Benefits of Alfresco Cooking

1) Cooking outdoors is a natural mood booster

When you’re spending time cooking outdoors, you’re breathing in refreshing and revitalising fresh air. This means you’re taking in more oxygen than you would if you were indoors, which improves your mood and focus. As well as this, your body is constantly absorbing vitamin D from the sunlight, which is an important nutrient to keep bones, muscles, and teeth healthy. Vitamin D helps maintain the levels of adrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine in your body, helping to boost your overall mood.

2) It’s healthier than cooking indoors

Did you know that preparing and cooking food outdoors over open flames can help to prevent food poisoning, lower your cholesterol, and reduce the risk of air pollution and certain carcinogens in your food? Cooking indoors can have hidden risks of indoor air pollution from heating oil, fat, and other ingredients, especially in kitchens with poor ventilation. Cooking outdoors can reduce this risk since the air disperses more easily.

3) Food cooked outdoors tastes better

You may have noticed that when you cook outdoors, the flavours, tastes and smells become more intense. Food flavour can be affected by air temperature and moisture, and the smell of the outdoors heightens your senses and allows you to really relish the delicious taste of your food.

4) You can cook outdoors all year round (although summer is generally preferable!)

Cooking outdoors can be done all year round, come rain or shine. Of course, it may be more pleasant in the summer months when the sun sets late at night and the weather is mild, but the brave of heart may take on the challenge of cooking outdoors in any weather! BBQs can even be used as a heat source on chillier evenings, which is a more eco friendly option than a conventional patio heater.

5) It’s a relaxing social experience

Cooking outdoors is a great way to gather your loved ones together and enjoy a relaxing, convivial atmosphere. It can help you feel more connected and create new memories, both of which are important for mental health and wellbeing. It can also be good for physical health, as helping out with the cooking or taking part in outdoor games allow you to stay active.

Top 5 Benefits of Alfresco Dining

1) Eat whilst enjoying the fresh air

Eating outdoors can have fantastic health benefits in comparison to staying indoors and breathing in stale, recycled air. The more time you spend outdoors, the healthier you are, so naturally eating outdoors is a great opportunity to stay fit and healthy. It’s particularly important if you’re used to being indoors a lot, for example if you have a 9-5 office job or you spend lots of time in the same room.

2) Being surrounded by nature is naturally soothing

Have you ever noticed that introducing a small addition of nature to your surroundings, like a potted plant, can have soothing effects on your physical and mental health? It’s no wonder that eating in an environment where you’re totally surrounded by nature can be so beneficial to your health. As well as helping to control your blood pressure and heart rate, it can also decrease the level of stress hormones and ease muscle tension!

3) You’ll be eating in a relaxed setting

Eating in an outdoor setting often offers amazing views. You’re surrounded by luscious green grass, vibrant flowers, and incredible textures and smells, all of which are far more relaxing and enjoyable than being cooped up inside. You’ll feel more relaxed and be able to enjoy a tasty, healthy meal that little bit more.

4) Your body will function better

Dining outdoors can help you to destress, and everything in your body works better when you’re stress-free! When you’re relaxed, your body is able to correctly release the HCl enzyme into your stomach, which helps you break down your food and kills all harmful pathogens. It also aids your body in absorbing all the correct nutrients, instead of passing them without digesting properly.

5) You will sleep better

Dining outdoors can help to improve your quality of sleep after you’ve eaten. The fresh air around you and the laid-back atmosphere will help your mind and body to feel rejuvenated, and your body can seamlessly ease into its bedtime routine.

One of the most unique gardens we’d recommend exploring is The Japanese Garden, located in the small village of St Mawgan, just outside Newquay. It’s unlike anything you’ve seen before, with Japanese Maples unfurling in the brightest reds and greens, streams gurgling and birdsong filling the air. You’ll find a Bonsai nursery, Cherry blossoms, Camellias, waterfalls, bamboo groves, a Zen Garden, a tea house, and so much more. It truly does make for an inspiring spring day out.

Luxurious Glamping Accommodation

As you drive up to The Beeches Glamping, you’ll be greeted with a tranquil sanctuary of nature which makes for the ideal glamping retreat. We have four luxury glamping pods (Willow, Maple, Cedar, and Hazel), which have been designed slightly differently to accommodate every need.

Willow, Maple, and Hazel are all dog-friendly and can accommodate up to two furry friends, whereas Cedar does not accommodate pets. The garden areas of Maple, Cedar, and Hazel all boast a wonderful wood-fired hot tub where you can soak under the stars, but the garden area of Willow does not feature a hot tub.

There are two types of sleeping arrangements; Willow and Cedar sleep up to four people with a double bed and a double sofa bed, whereas Maple and Hazel sleep up to two adults and three children in a double bed, sofa bed, and bunk beds.

All four pods feature fully kitted out kitchens with an induction hob, microwave, toaster, and kettle, an ensuite shower room, a smart TV and free Wi-Fi. In the private garden area of each pod, you will find a picnic bench and a firepit with BBQ grill and benches.

Fabulous Outdoor Fun and Alfresco Dining

As well as our gorgeous accommodation, there’s lots to enjoy on site here at The Beeches Glamping. Whether you’re spending the day adventuring around Cornwall and returning to The Beeches Glamping in the evening, or you’re enjoying a relaxing retreat without leaving the site, our communal and outdoor spaces are a great place to gather everyone together.

The site is secure for children and dogs, so you can let your four-legged friends off their leads and not worry about them escaping, and you can rest assured that your little ones will be safe too. There’s plenty of open space for dogs and kids to run around and burn off some energy, and our children’s play tent also makes an appearance during the summer months. This is packed full of board games and cushions to keep little ones entertained, especially if they need somewhere to hide out when the weather isn’t great.

The large playing field is not only meant for little ones – it’s perfect for gathering your whole party for a game of cricket, rounders, boules, or any number of other outdoor games and activities. At the top of the playing field lies our communal BBQ hut; a large space with plenty of seating where you can cook up a feast for your party. There are picnic tables situated just outside of the BBQ hut, so you don’t have to stay inside the hut to eat (it can get a bit smoky!). We know how unpredictable the English weather can be, so we’ve made sure our hut is undercover. That way, you can still enjoy a delicious BBQ, even if the heavens decide to open! If you book the entire site, you’ll have full use of the BBQ hut throughout your stay.

Located between Maple and Cedar pods is our Honesty Shop, stocking essential items in case you’ve forgotten to bring your toothbrush or you need a few extra snacks. You’ll find coal and logs to light a fire, tea bags, ice cream, cold drinks, kits for making s’mores, and other essentials to make your stay unforgettable.

Cornwall’s unique diversity of landscapes makes it the perfect home for an exceptional array of insects, mammals, and sea creatures. From rare butterflies to basking sharks, and wild horses to grey seals, Cornwall has it all. Here are just some of the wonderful wildlife species you may be lucky enough to spot during your upcoming visit to Cornwall…

Marvellous Marine Creatures

Visitors flock to Cornwall year after year to discover our fascinating range of marine animals. Grey Seals are a common sight around the Cornish coast, with key watch points including Pendennis, Godrevy Point, Trevose Head and Pentire Point. Common Dolphins are regularly spotted in the waters around Padstow and Port Isaac, with occasional sightings of Harbour Porpoise, Bottlenose and Risso’s Dolphins. Whales have also become frequent visitors to Cornish waters in recent years, with Orcas, Humpback Whales, and Minke Whales being seen. Be sure to look out for the Basking Sharks, as well as the occasional Leatherback Turtle, too!

Brilliant Birdlife

Cornwall’s diverse habitats are home to an amazing collection of birdlife, with something different to see throughout the year. Discover many species of seabirds including the Herring Gull, Fulmar, Shearwater, Gannet and Sandpiper residing in Cornwall’s beaches and dunes; waders and wildfowl such as Curlews, Whimbrels, Dunlin, Wigeon and Teal that live in tidal estuaries along the Cornish coasts; woodland species including Treecreepers, Woodpeckers and Nuthatches that nestle in the trees; and birds of prey such as Common Buzzards, Kestrels, Barn Owls, Red Kites, Goshanks, and Peregrine Falcons as they soar through the skies. Not to mention our county bird, the Chough!

Magnificent Mammals

You can spot some of the UK’s most sought-after mammals here in Cornwall. River otters, also known as river dogs, can be found throughout the county, feasting on juicy eels, freshwater fish, frogs, and crustaceans. Wild ponies can often be seen on the cliff tops and are useful in keeping back bracken and encouraging wildflowers to grow – Bodmin Moor is a great place to spot them. Our wonderful county is home to a variety of deer species, including Fallow, Roe, and Red Deer; with the once extinct Beaver recently making a comeback, thanks to an exciting project at Woodland Valley Farm to reintroduce them back into the wild.

Interesting Insects

Finally, Cornwall is also home to an exciting plethora of beautiful butterflies, with many rare species making an appearance. The extremely rare Silver-Studded Blue and Dark Green Fritillary Butterflies can be found in Cornish dune systems, as well as common Peacock, Red Admiral, Comma and Small Tortoiseshell Butterflies. Great places to spot our beautiful butterflies include the Upton Towans and Penhale Dunes Nature Reserves.
