Our Recommended Winter Walks in Newquay

1) Newquay to Watergate Bay

During the winter months, a walk along Cornwall’s coastline brings the scenes described in Daphne Du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn to life. Winter storms unleash their power as waves crash against harbour walls and the rain lashes against dramatic cliff edges. A walk along the coast is one of the most incredible ways to witness Cornwall in winter, so it’s no surprise that one of our favourite walks to embark on is from the centre of Newquay to Watergate Bay.

This 3.5 mile walk along the coastal path takes just over one hour to complete and leads you past several stunning sights including Tolcarne Beach and Lusty Glaze Beach before you reach Watergate Bay. There, you’ll have a fantastic choice of food and drink to indulge in at Watergate Bay Hotel, in any of their three unique eateries which all boast fantastic views across the water.

Distance from The Beeches Glamping: 10-minute drive

2) Newquay to Crantock Beach

Another fantastic Cornish coastline walk to discover during the winter months is from Newquay to Crantock Beach. This circular walk rewards intrepid explorers with jaw-dropping views of Towan Headland and Pentire Point, both of which boast a particularly moody atmosphere resulting from the colder winter weather. You can start this walk from the town centre next to the train station, where you can pick up the Southwest Coast Path and follow the marked trail up to Towan Head. You’ll head south along the popular surfing hotspot of Fistral Beach, before reaching Pentire. Then follow the footpath around the headland at Pentire Point and be rewarded with fantastic views overlooking Crantock Beach.

Lewinnick Lodge, situated right on the Pentire Headland, is a must-visit pub for unbeatable views across the beach, boasting a fantastic menu of delicious, traditional pub food and drinks. Thanks to the fire, it’s also exceptionally warm and cosy during the colder months, making for the perfect pit stop after a brisk winter walk.

Distance from The Beeches Glamping: 10-minute drive

3) Crantock to Polly Joke Beach

Once you’ve reached the golden sands of Crantock Beach, you may feel like continuing your journey a little bit further. A nearby location which is well worth a visit is Polly Joke Beach, accessible via a 2-mile walk across the coastal path. Slightly off the beaten track, this little sandy cove is a beautiful spot set away from the main activity of Newquay, which serves up dramatic sights during the winter months.

Cornwall’s beaches are a dog-lover’s heaven from October to March, as most beaches lift their restrictions. This means that miles of deserted sandy beaches are opened up for your four-legged friends to race around on golden sand to their heart’s content.

Distance from The Beeches Glamping: 20-minute drive

4) Cardinham Woods

If you love the great outdoors, then a fantastic woodland adventure awaits you this winter at Cardinham Woods. Deep in the rich green forest lie four stunning walking trails, each one tailored to different abilities. There are also three cycling trails for those looking for more of an adrenaline rush, as well as a children’s play area, picnic area, café, and even a forest school! During wintertime, the forest offers a crisp breath of fresh air and magnificent scenery as the backdrop of your walk. It’s the perfect place to bring the whole family (including your four-legged friends) for an enchanting woodland walk.

When you need to take the weight off your feet, you can refuel with a hot drink and delicious, freshly prepared food at the Woods Café. This family-run, independent café has a small but perfectly formed menu with something for everyone to enjoy, including delicious cakes and scones and locally roasted coffee. During the winter, they even have a roaring log-fire to keep you toasty and warm.

Distance from The Beeches Glamping: 25-minute drive

5) The Lost Gardens of Heligan

Due to Cornwall’s mild climate throughout the year, the county’s many famous gardens are a marvel to visit and explore during any season. The magical Lost Gardens of Heligan are open all year round and are a true delight to experience in winter. If you’re lucky enough to visit during a snowy day, you’ll find the gardens coated in a blanket of fluffy icing!

The Gannel and Crantock

Fancy an adventure a bit closer to the water? Pull on your waterproof boots for the walk between The Gannel Estuary and Crantock – it’s a wet one! This walk is only revealed at low tide, so make sure you check the tide times before you depart.

The entrance to the coastal path lies at the edge of the picturesque Gannel, which is where this adventure begins. Walkers can follow the bridge across a glorious wide expanse of the Gannel that flows out to the Atlantic Ocean. This area is often frequented by seabirds, ponies, and dog walkers, and you may even see the occasional fishing boat taking shelter.

The clear pathway will lead you through reeds, mudflats, and dunes to the beautiful village of Crantock; a popular hit with young families due to its beach filled with an abundance of sheltered pools and gorgeous golden sands. Porth Reservoir

If you’re a keen wildlife and wildflower spotter, then a walk further inland around the Porth Reservoir is the perfect adventure for you. Away from the windswept coast, the beautiful circular walk sits alongside the ruins of Nanswhyden House and Fir Hill Manor, which has now become a wildlife reserve. Walkers can spot deer, foxes, and rabbits, amongst other wildlife.

Starting at the edge of the reservoir, the trail passes bird hides on the woodland path, which was once the grand entrance to the estate. The route allows walkers to take in the incredible sights of the ruins of both houses, the pretty hamlet of Colan with its distinguished 13th Century church, incredible views over the water, and whole hosts of wildlife and wildflowers – there’s an exceptional display of bluebells in spring!

The walk is easy-going, but rather long at 5.2 miles, so come prepared with suitable shoes. Car parking can be found at the reservoir entrance.

If you want to explore the beauty of Newquay by foot but want a much shorter walk, the Bedruthan Steps Beach is ideal for you. Starting at Carnewas car park, you’ll find a winding path that offers some of the best views of the Atlantic Ocean and the birds and wildlife which call it home.

This short walk offers a delight for the senses, with crisp, salty sea breezes, breath-taking sights which are a feast for the eyes, and exercise that will get your heart pounding. Volcanic rocks rise from the sand, and magnificent cliffs tower over the golden sands. Unfortunately, there is currently no beach access due to erosion, but the walk above on the cliffs is still absolutely spectacular.

After your brisk walk, we highly recommend popping into the lovely Caernwas Tearooms for a delicious cream tea!

The final walk on our list is one that sees visitors rewarded with spectacular views, cavernous coves, and wonderful wildlife. But many visitors don’t realise how wonderfully wild Cornwall is in the winter months. Keep reading to discover our top 5 reasons to visit Cornwall this winter…

Top 5 Reasons to Visit Cornwall in Winter

1) Quiet, dog-friendly beaches

Although it’s definitely not sunbathing weather here in winter, you’ll be rewarded with beautifully quiet and serene beaches, where people are few and far between. Seasonal dog bans are lifted and miles upon miles of beaches become available to dog walkers – we guarantee your four-legged friends will love running around on Cornwall’s wintery beaches!

Newquay is home to 12 distinct beaches, with each one providing a wonderfully unique experience in the winter months. Our favourites include Fistral Beach, Whipsiderry Beach, Tolcarne Beach, Watergate Bay Beach, Porth Beach, Crantock Beach, Newquay Harbour Beach, Great Western Beach, Holywell Bay Beach, Polly Joke Beach, Perranporth Beach and Mawgan Porth Beach.

2) Wonderful winter walks

The scenic beauty of Cornwall in wintertime is best discovered by foot. Wrap up warm in your woolly hats and scarves and head for the stunning South-West Coastal Path to take in those spectacular views of the wintery Cornish countryside.

Cardinham Woods is a beautiful destination for winter walks in Cornwall, with miles of dog-friendly trails to explore. We love walking this circular 3.5-mile route around Pentire Headland in the winter months to take in those awe-inspiring views. Or, if you’re looking to explore another side of Truro this winter, try out this great walk around the county’s capital city and the Old Newham Railway.

3) Cosy pubs with roaring fires

At the end of a long wintery walk, there’s nothing better than enjoying a refreshing pint and delicious food beside a crackling fire. Cornwall is home to some of the UK’s prettiest pubs, many of which have open fires to enjoy during the colder months.

Some of our favourite cosy pubs with roaring open fires or rustic log burners include The Plume of Feathers in Mitchell, The Tartan Fox, The Two Cloombs and Jamaica Inn in Bodmin.

4) Winter wildlife

Cornwall is a haven for wildlife all year round; but in the winter months, there are some key wildlife highlights to look out for. You may be less likely to spot sharks and dolphins in our shores – but seals, migrating birds and some magnificent mammals can be seen during the colder months.

Discover a wide range of birdlife during the winter months, including finches, tits, nuthatches, and woodpeckers. Birds of prey such as buzzards and hen harriers regularly circle Cornwall’s wintery skies. Grey squirrels can commonly be seen, as well as badgers, deer, otters, and foxes. You may still be able to catch glimpses of common dolphins and whales, but you’re more likely to see grey seals coming up to shore to rest. Look out for wading birds such as herons, ducks, egrets, and geese, too.

5) Fantastic festive events

Cornwall really knows how to put on a show at Christmas time! Our county is home to some amazing indoor and outdoor attractions which help to celebrate the festive season year after year.

Head to the Shipwreck Treasure Museum in Charlestown this Christmas as it transforms into one of the most family-friendly festive places in all of Cornwall. If personalised Santa experiences are more your cup of tea, we recommend visiting Camel Creek for magical festivities throughout the park. Christmas at the Eden Project is not to be missed, with an all-new immersive music and light experience. Or climb aboard the Bodmin & Wenford Railway for a Christmas Murder Mystery and story time with Santa!
