Enjoy awe-inspiring views of the coastline as you cross the footbridge to the island and explore the wildlife-rich headland, before venturing into the 13th Century castle ruins. There is even a beach below the castle, which is ideal for a quick paddle or exploring the rock pools. Be sure to look out for the variety of flora and fauna that reside here; if you’re lucky, you may even spot a seal bobbing around in the water!
The Picturesque Pendennis Castle
Perched atop a headland with panoramic views out to sea, the picturesque Pendennis Castle has defended Cornwall from invasion since Tudor times. This mighty fortress was originally built by Henry VIII in the 16th Century and played an important role in WWI and WWII. Rediscover history as you explore the winding stone staircases and fascinating gun rooms, whilst breathing in that fresh sea air. Thanks to some exciting and immersive installations, you can see a team of Tudor gunners in action as they defend the castle under attack. Pendennis is home to a huge variety of wildlife and birds, with plenty of observation spots to discover what lies beneath.
The Stunning St Michael’s Mount
St Michael’s Mount is home to an ancient castle fortress, sublime subtropical gardens and a bustling harbour village that have served the St Aubyn family for centuries. Discover a distinct moment in time in each room of the castle, with both new and ancient stories just waiting to be discovered. Duck through doorways and wander through old corridors and gain an important insight to the castle’s turbulent past – from priory to fortified castle to family home. The beautifully landscaped gardens were designed in 1878 for Sir John St Aubyn and are open to the public on selected dates throughout the year.
The Captivating Caerhays Castle
Experience the timeless magic and charm of Cornwall’s castle by the sea, set in a secluded spot near St Austell. Caerhays Castle is a Grade I listed English Heritage building and is home to the Williams family, with its rooms showcasing treasures obtained by its residents over the last 140 years. The displays change each year, but include Victorian Jugs, 19th Century crockery, and an old Edwardian billiard room. The gardens are in full bloom in springtime, boasting huge, old, colourful fauna and a magnificent 100-year-old Magnolia tree. There is even a private beach below, which is ideal for children and dogs. Caerhays Castle and gardens are open to the public each spring.
The Spectacular St Mawes Castle
St Mawes Castle is one of Henry VIII’s best preserved and most elaborately decorated coastal fortresses. It was part of a collection of forts built between 1539-1545 to protect against invasion from the French and Spanish, with a distinct clover-leaf shape which would have originally been surrounded by octagonal defences. Enter the castle through the ancient guardhouse and spot the handgun loops and murder holes; as well as beautiful stone carvings designed to flatter Henry VIII and his son. Uncover the castle’ ‘oubliette’, where prisoners were kept underground, in the dark, as a punishment for their crimes. Climb the castle keep and admire truly spectacular sea views which stretch down to the Fal Estuary.
